Chronology

From 1930 to 1993, the Identification and Documentation Program produced English language ID cards for Puerto Rican migrants to prove their United States citizenship. Puerto Ricans who needed to prove their Puerto Rican ancestry and United States citizenship, filled out an Application for Certificate of Identification and provided supporting documentation.

Applying for this card was voluntary. Individuals usually applied if they needed proof of citizenship to work, travel or receive social services. This collection does not contain records after 1959 although the program continued until 1993. The documents on this site are only the documents filed and issued during the time period of 1930-1959.
