Puerto Rican Migration Archives
Preserving Puerto Rican Community History

"El Centro is a vital institution. It is the archives of our community history".

Luis Gardens Acosta,
Director El Puente

Puerto Ricans are dispersed throughout the United States and have long histories in various regions. For example, Puerto Ricans have been in New York for over 100 years and contribute enormously to the cultural, social, political and economic fabric of the state.

Much of the documentation that records this rich history and culture is in danger of being lost. It is up to individuals who have or collect records in libraries, archives and other repositories to preserve the history of Latinos in the U.S. The Center for Puerto Rican Studies plays a role in preservation by housing a major repository that documents Puerto Ricans in New York City.
