Measuring DNA length by electrophoresis

Since the speed of movement through the gel depends on the size of the DNA, we can measure the sizes of particular DNA bands from their positions in the gel, long ones near the starting position at the top of the gel, and short ones further along near the bottom.

To measure the DNA sizes exactly, we compare the positions of samples of unknown sizes with standards, DNA samples with known lengths. In the gel below, we can see that sample 1 has a length of 70 bases and sample 2 has a length of 130 bases by comparing them with the standards on the right hand side.
