The Bronx is known as the home of the Yankees and the Bronx Zoo. For others outside of our beloved Bronx, the borough is the epitome of urban decay. To many of our younger residents, it is known as "The Boogey Down Bronx." In the last several decades, the Bronx has become "El Condado de la Salsa"- The Borough of Salsa. Latinos from all parts of Latin America have settled in the Bronx and have created vibrant and thriving communities where there was once blight. Out of a total population of 1.5 million, Latinos account for a little over fifty percent. From Riverdale to the South Bronx, from City Island to Highbridge, Latino culture permeates the landscape. Today in the streets of the Bronx, the more prominent sights and sounds come from the culture that Latinos have made here, and also from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador and Latin America. |
