HISPANICS
IN NEW YORK STATE: PERCENT DISTRIBUTION BY NATIONALITY |
|
According to the 2000 Census, Puerto Ricans represent 37 percent of all Hispanics in New York State. Historically Puerto Ricans have concentrated in the City of New York, but they have dispersed throughout the counties of New York State increasingly in the last fifty years. | |
Although Puerto Ricans immigrated to New York since the 19th century, their numbers increased fast after the U.S. took over Puerto Rico in 1898. During the 20th century a series of economic, social and political events in Puerto Rico and the U.S. combined to generate waves of migration towards the U.S. mailand, especially New York. Congress granted Puerto Ricans U.S. citizenship through the Jones Act of 1917;they were recruited to serve in the armed forces starting with World War I.
