Nickecha Mcleod, Bronx River

March 2, 2005

There are factories-Frito Lays, Coca-Cola, a Newspaper Plant, to name few, along the Bronx River. The factories are located in the Hunts Point and Sound View section of the Bronx. They dump their liquid waste into the river; this waste has ammonia, sulfur, nitrates, oxides and other compounds in it.

  1. What do you think this liquid waste does to the river? I think that the liquid harms the river a lot because it has a lot of liquid waste.
  2. What do you think it does to animal and plant life in the river? I think it kills the animals and the plants because if you take some of the liquid from the river and if you put it on them they would die.
  3. How might it affect the people that live near the river? It affects the people because the kids go near the river and think that they could drink it and they do not know what they are doing and they would probably die.

We make a graph about bleach and alcohol and other things and we had to write which one was acid or base and it have a higher concentration of hydrogen and base on the hydroxide ions and a lower concentration of hydrogen and I enjoy doing it because I really learn a lot.

  1. What pH range do you think the different areas of the river will be?

        (a) The estuary 9
        (b) Fresh water 1, 2
        (c) Salt water 8

According to the chart that how I get my answers.
  2. Would you swim in the Bronx River? I would not swim in the Bronx River because you would get things on your skin and the water is not clean.

  3. Would you eat any animal-fish, mussel, crab, clam, etc. caught from the Bronx River? No, I would not eat any animal in the river but the one I would eat is the crab bought at a store.
