Course Description

The Chemistry 1 course is designed as a non-intimidating introduction to chemistry for high school students with a wide range of interest and abilities.  The course meets students’ intellectual needs while challenging them to use chemistry content knowledge to make informed decisions about personal and societal issues.  The course places heavy emphasis on critical thinking skills and less on the mathematics of chemistry.  The course includes introductions to organic chemistry, biochemistry, industrial chemistry, environmental chemistry, and nuclear chemistry providing a rich sampling of modern chemistry.

Content Standard 3

Observe, investigate, describe and explain the structure, properties and changes in properties of matter; forms of energy, its transfer actions, interactions and conservation; motions and forces; chemical reactions; interactions of energy and matter.

The course can be broken down into three areas.

I. Structure of Atoms

II. Chemical Reactions

III. Structure and properties of Matter

Under each of these areas there are performance standards, essential knowledge and skills, and technology integration skills that students are expected to perform and learn throughout the duration of this course.
