DAY 2
Study Group Decision: After a brief introduction to Day 2 activities, students decide their study groups. Students form four "NASA Design Teams" according to their choices.
Study Group Inquiry on "History of Flight”: Students inquiry on the subject by searching on the linked web sites and web pages.
Study Group Discussion: Students discuss and note their inquiry in their study groups.
Whole Group Discussion: Teacher assists students to discuss their inquiry results as a whole group by asking guiding and open-ended questions.
Pilot Chitchat Act: Students joins the pilot chitchat activity the first as individuals and then as groups. The purpose of this activity is to develop the ability to chat like a pilot. Students review the phonetic alphabet pilots use to communicate with other pilots and the ground crew, decode the n-Lessages Uy using- the phonetic alphabet pilots use, and think of some other ways to use pilot language.
Reflective Journal Writing: Students reflects their understanding by writing their individual journal. These reflective journals will be used for formative evaluation.
DAY 3
Virtual Field Trip to "Airventure Museum": Teacher briefly introduces Day 3 activities and guides students to start their virtual field trip to the museum.
Whole Group Discussion: Teacher encourages students to discuss their virtual field trip.
Study Group Inquiry on "Principles of Flight-l": Students inquiry on the subject by searching on the linked web sites and web pages.
Funnel Fun Activity: Students participate in funnel fun activity. The purpose of this activity is to understand why birds, kites, and planes can fly by applying apply Bernoulli's Principle.
Whole Group Discussion: Teacher encourages students to discuss their inquiry and activity results as a whole group by asking guiding and open ended questions.
DAY 4
Video "The Case of the Challenging Flight" (Running time-58:25):
Teacher briefly introduces the video "The Case of the Challenging Flight" "In The Case of the Challenging Flight, the tree house detectives enter a contest to create an egg carton plane. While designing their plane, the detectives learn about the four forces of flight (lift, thrust., drag, and gravity), all in an attempt to build an "egg-tra-ordinary" flying machine." Retrieved on 3/3/03 from NASA SciFiles.
Whole Group Discussion: Teacher assists students to discuss the video.
Doctor D's Lab Simulations: "Lift, Drag, Weight, and Thrust": Students do simulations on the Doctor D'S Lab Web link. The purpose of this simulation is to understand and apply four forces of flight.
Study Group Inquiry on "Principles of Flight-21”: Students inquiry on the subject by searching on the linked web sites and web pages.
Paper Plane Making Activity: Students choose and do their paper plane designs from the provided web links or design their own paper planes. The purpose of this activity is to provide students with a design and/or production challenge to apply their understanding.
Whole Group Discussion: Teacher encourages students to discuss their inquiry and activity results as a whole group by asking guiding and open ended questions.
DAY 5
Science Experiments: Teacher provides study groups with the science experiment handouts and materials. Students do the experiments in their study groups. The purpose of these experiments is to make students do experiments in the study groups to develop understandings of principles of flight.
Study Group Discussion: Students discuss their experiment results in their study groups.
Science Lab Observation Form: Students fill out their Science lab observation forms. These forms will be used for formative evaluation.
Study Group Inquiry on "Careers in Flight": Students inquiry on the subject by searching on the linked web sites and web pages.
"Robin Whirlybird on Her Rotorcraft Adventures" Activity: Teacher introduces the activity and encourages students to perform the activity. The purposes of the study are to have students to use their understanding about careers in flight while they are reading an online story.
Whole Group Discussion: Teacher encourages students to discuss their inquiry and activity results as a whole group by asking guiding and open-ended questions.
