A fourth grade teacher is about to review problem solving in preparation for a test that the children will take. Notice the focus of her review, her role and that of the students.  As you watch the teacher in this clip, notice how she models the process of problem solving.

    1. In the before, during and after approach to lesson planning, what can you tell that the students have already done?

    2. Can you identify their prior knowledge?

    3. Is this teaching by telling?  Who is giving the information?

    4. What is her response to children who offer ideas that do not address the point that she is focusing on?

    5. Do the children who offer those ideas feel diminished?  Why or why not?
