Back to Project List

PROJECT NUMBER: 05
INSTRUCTOR(S):
L. Porte, Hostos Community College, CUNY
TITLE:
Basic Math Skills & Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Projects
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Math: To develop interactive online materials so that the MAT 1604 course can be offered in a hybrid mode. PDA: Develop potential uses of the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) in a classroom.
DISCIPLINE:
Mathematics

SUBJECT AREA:
Developmental Math
GRADE-LEVEL:
Undergraduate
INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL: (competency that students should be able to demonstrate upon completion of the entire unit)
Assist students to become more familiar with the course content and to allow them to ask questions, share their ideas, and self-test their grasp of concepts outside the classroom in a less intimidating environment.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: (use an action verb in a description of a measurable outcome)
Increase student participation in the learning process and provide students with much greater access to the instructor, and to classmates. Students spend time learning the course content, solving exercises, and participating in online discussions.
RATIONALE: (brief justification -- why you feel the students need to learn this topic)
MAT 1604 provides the basic skills that will be utilized in other mathematics and science courses. The main purpose for the development of these materials is to help students to become more comfortable with the goals and objectives of the course.
LESSON CONTENT: (what is to be taught)
Interactive materials have been developed for the following topics: Whole Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, Ratios and Proportions, Percents. All these materials are introduced within the Blackboard environment.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:

a. Focusing event (something to get the students' attention):
Interactive materials where students are able to test their skills.
b. Teaching procedures (methods you will use):
Concepts are introduced within the Blackboard environment. The Discussion Board is used to discuss homeworks.
c. Formative check (progress checks throughout the module):
After completing the interactive practices, student receive an evaluation of their work.
d. Student Participation (how you will get the students to participate):
Weekly assignments lead the students throughout the materials. Online participation is a requirement for this course and student participation is recorded in the Blackboard environment.
e. Closure (how you will end the module):
Each of the modules developed ends with an interactive practice.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES: (how you will measure outcomes to determine if the material has been learned)
Students taking this hybrid course take the same final exam that students enrolled in a traditionally taught class.
MAJOR TECHNOLOGY:
Flash
OTHER REQUIRED TECHNOLOGY: (what students will need in order to experience this module online--plugins, viewers, etc.)
To access the materials presented here, a Flash viewer is needed. However, to fully experience the online offering of the MAT 1604 class, students would have to register for the course.

ABSTRACT:
In the past two years Hostos Community College has placed tremendous efforts to make technology an effective and integral part of the academic endeavor of the institution. As part of this effort, the development of asynchronous and hybrid course has been an important component. It is in this context that the online materials for the course MAT 1604 started to be developed. Also during this time, changes in policies within CUNY make evident that, in the near future, students will have fewer opportunities to have access to courses that are remedial in nature. However, a high percentage of our freshman class is in need of such courses. This reality implies the need to offer our students more online instruction in the area of Basic Skills so that if these courses are faced out from CUNY, our students will still be able to benefit from the online materials developed. The goal of this project is two-fold: first, to develop more online content materials to be able to ensure that at least 50% of the instruction for the MAT 1604-Basic Skills course could be done online, and second to make these materials interactive. To achieve this goal software as PowerPoint, Flash, and Director will be used within the Blackboard environment.
